Questing

A Quest is a fun and lyrical way to tell a story about a particular place – maybe a downtown village, a fishing harbor, or a nature preserve. Questing is the recreational pursuit of this story, across any land- or seascape.

Commonly written in rhyming verse, a Quest contains movement clues that get you from one spot to the next. (A Quest usually includes a site map as well.) The features at these spots illustrate the story. Quests also have informational clues, that interpret the meaning of the features and their place in the story – maybe an old mill site, a beaver dam, an eroded bank, or a low salt marsh.

People who go on a Quest discover and learn the significance of its features as they move from clue to clue unraveling a story that sheds new meaning on a particular place. Quests always end with the discovery of a Quest box that has a Quest stamp, sign in book, and additional interpretative materials about the site.

To learn more about how Questing got its start read the story of Valley Quest, the nation’s first Questing program.
